Repair and Maintenance
Being the building block of the body, proteins are vital when it comes to the development and repair of body tissues including hair, skin, eyes, muscles and organs.
Proteins are a major source of energy in the body such that after the maintenance of body tissues and other functions, the rest of the protein is directed to energy.
Protein play an important role in the creation of some hormones. Some good examples of these proteins are insulin and secretin. Insulin regulates blood sugar, while secretin aids in the digestive process by stimulating the pancreas and the intestine to create necessary digestive juices.
The rate of chemical reactions within our bodies are increased by enzymes, which are proteins. This includes breaking down carbohydrates and fat molecules, and aiding in the creation of DNA.
Transportation and Storage of Molecules
Proteins such as hemoglobin, which transports oxygen throughout the body, aid in the transportation and storage of molecules. Ferritin is another example of a protein, and combines with iron for storage in the liver.
