Handling Defeat The Best Way Possible
Perhaps you have high hopes about the upcoming game. You know that you are in one of your best conditions and you have trained so hard. Yet, you always do not know what the future holds. You cannot be entirely sure if all of the things that you have done prior to the game will be enough to defeat your opponent. Sometimes you are just out skilled. Sometimes, your opponent is just lucky.
When you lose, your first reaction may be to feel numb. It is what you show to the world. You will have the tendency to show them that you are not affected and that you are being a good sport although deep inside, you feel like you want to crumble. You feel like nothing is going right anymore. When you are all alone, the first thing to do is ask yourself a wide variety of questions. You may ask yourself why you have lost. You are going to question how good you are in playing the sport.
Remember that there is nothing wrong with you if you feel disappointment after losing as this is absolutely normal. It is okay. The only time when it is not okay anymore is when your relationship with other people gets affected in the process. For example, your relationship with your loved one may be suffering because of your feelings of loss and anger. If this is the case, it is best to check with a counselor. It will help you and your partner work things out. At the same time, you will have the realization that you can heal from your bitter loss.
Here are different things that you can do so that you can handle defeat better:
- Try to do the healing alone. It is normal that people who care about you would like to know more about the things that you are going through and would try to help you but healing after losing is best done alone. You can go on a trip on your own. It will allow you to think clearly and you can teach yourself to accept that you have lost.
- Stop asking questions. If you would always ask why you have done things incorrectly, you will never heal. Accept that you have made a mistake and that the moment is already over. There are still a lot of opportunities that you will have afterwards.
- Be optimistic. The reason why you may be feeling sad is because you are pessimistic about your future. You may assume that nothing right is ever going to happen to you anymore. When you know that you are capable of winning then you are becoming optimistic.
- Boost your self-confidence – This is when you will need the help of other people around you. Let them give you the love and encouragement you need. It will make a lot of difference.
Remember that dwelling on your shortcomings and the things “you could have done” when you lost will not help you in your current situation.
