Disc Golf, Your Alternative to Golf
Are you a fan of golf but do not have a membership to a golf club? Golf is an exceptionally popular sport but due to limited to no public places with a golf course. The only way you can play golf is by being a member of a club or paying a fee each time to a club when you want to play. This can turn out to be quite costly, which is a reason why golf is considered as a luxury sport. Which can be a reason why there has been a rise in popularity of disc golf.
If you want the same amount of fun, that you would get in golf without putting a dent in your wallet then you should try disc golf.
Never heard of disc golf?
Started in the 70’s disc golf involves a frisbee or flying disc instead of a golf club and ball. The concept of the game is similar to golf. You have a “tee” area from where you start and you throw the disc to the “hole” which is referred to as pole hole, an elevated metal basket. Like golf, the person who gets the disc in the pole hole in the fewest throws wins.
You start from the tee and make your way down the fairway. You take throws from each spot the disc lands. The fairway typically has obstacles such as trees and shrubs, as you would find on a golf course. In disc golf, you get the same joys as playing golf without having to lug clubs around and paying a substantial fee to play.
Can anyone play disc golf?
Another benefit to disc golf is that it is suitable for all ages. Be it kids or adults, the sport is fun filled for everyone. Yes, there are specific techniques to throw the disc which makes it go further but physically disc golf is less demanding than golf. For golf, you need to have power and precision when striking the ball. With disc golf you just need to throw the disc, while power does help it isn’t an essential requirement.
If you get really good at it, you can even try it professionally. There is a Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) operating in 47 countries that organizes competitive events for men and women.
As the game gains popularity there are more and more disc golf courses being introduced. Many parks in major cities even have courses set up so individuals can go play when they want. Courses are similar to those you would find at a golf course. If you are an avid fan then you can even set a hole up in your own backyard for practicing. All you need is a disc and a disc golf goal, pole hole. You can follow the advice provided here by Disc Golf Association (DGA) to help you design a course for yourself. Using these recommendations for your backyard course would also allow you to utilize any of the linked disc golf goals/holes.
Having your own course will allow you to practice the sport anytime you want. Training to become better and being physically active. This will enhance your interest in the game and allow you to possibly compete professionally, if you put in the time and effort. If you enjoy golf but can’t afford it or want an alternative, then we highly recommend disc golf.
